We look for lessons in the actions of great leaders. We should instead be examining what goes on in their heads - particularly the way they creatively build on the tensions among conflicting ideas.

With conventional thinking, they wear away with every apparent reinforcement of the lesson that life is about accepting unattractive trade-offs. Fundamentally, the conventional thinker prefers to accept the world just as it is, whereas the integrative thinker welcomes the challenge of shaping the world for the better.
